Do you want to help a child discover their gifts? Would you like to make a lasting difference in a young life? That’s what mentoring is all about.
At St. David’s, we call our mentoring ministry Path to Shine (PTS). Each Wednesday for 2.5 hours, we gather to share meals and laughter, read and learn, explore and grow alongside elementary school students from Mimosa. In the process, mentors have the opportunity to be God’s hands and heart—offering the steady encouragement, care, and attention every child deserves.
Mentoring isn’t always easy, and it’s not for everyone. But when it clicks, it’s deeply rewarding and genuinely fun for both mentor and mentee.
If you’ve ever considered becoming a mentor, this could be your moment to explore that calling. Reach out to Patty Ormsby to learn more and see if Path to Shine is the right ministry for you.
Mentor Experiences

Mary Johnson (left) and Deonte celebrate a victory.
"PTS has given me an opportunity to connect with a child that may change the trajectory of their life forever."

Heidi Smith has mentored Katherine since Kindergarten.
"I first joined PTS for the selfish reason of loving to be around children and, having no grandchildren, it fulfilled a need. But I soon realized that I was also serving God by sharing my love and experience with my little mentee. And the friendships I’ve developed with other mentors are priceless."

I enjoy Path to Shine because it gives me the opportunity to make a positive impact on the children’s lives. Watching them grow in confidence, develop new skills, and discover their potential is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that my time and encouragement can help shape a child’s future makes the experience both fulfilling and inspiring.

I love the coming together in the midst of bedlam and finding the joy the kids have. Sometimes I just have to love through the problems and let my fellow mentors and the kids carry me.
Join us to change lives — your own as well as the children you teach, guide, encourage, and care for! Let us shine a brighter light in our community.
