Annual Parish Retreat
at Kanuga Conference Center in Hendersonville, NC
Yes, it’s that time of year again. On May 30-June 1, St. David’s Episcopal Church will travel to Kanuga Conference Center, and host its 4th Annual Parish Retreat. Affiliated with the Episcopal Church since 1928, Kanuga Conference Center is situated on 1,400 mountain acres near Hendersonville, North Carolina, with scenic Kanuga Lake at its center. Its beautiful setting makes it the perfect getaway for our parish retreat.
This year’s retreat is entitled, “GPS (God's Positioning System)…navigation for Christ's Disciples.” We will focus on the study of Christian discipleship, and talk about the daily struggle of living a life of radical discipleship in a society where success is based largely on consumerism and worldly measures. The retreat will include worship, study, fellowship, and good old fashioned recreation. Kanuga Conference Center has much to offer in the way of recreational facilities. The property contains four tennis courts, a full size and fully equipped gymnasium, and the thirty acre Kanuga Lake offers plentiful opportunities for swimming, boating, and fishing. While all of these facilities offer ample opportunities for fun and recreation, if you were to ask those who attended in years past what was best about Kanuga, most would talk about the opportunity to build community with the people of St. David’s. This retreat and its setting offer the perfect chance to connect with others in a way that is difficult during a Sunday morning. Whether it’s socializing together on the porch of a cottage, or swimming in the lake, Kanuga offers everything that you need to become connected to the good people of St. David’s. This is a weekend that you will not want to miss.
Costs for the weekend are $195 for each adult, $100 for youth age 10-18, and $55 for children age 5-9. (There is no charge for children under the age of 5!) The rates for the weekend include overnight lodging for two nights, six full meals, and access to all of the Saint David’s programs and worship services for the weekend. If you are interested in attending, please fill out the
registration form and deliver it along with your check for registration fees to the church office. The space at Kanuga is limited, and the few spots that are reserved for Saint David’s are sure to go fast. If you would like more information on the weekend, please contact Father Todd, or go to the Kanuga website at: www.kanuga.org. This will be a wonderful weekend together, and one that will in many ways transform your life. We hope to see you there!
Annual Horse Show
This is the largest single fundraiser that the parish has each year—The Saint David’s Hunter/Jumper Spring Bouquet.
For over 30 years, the Saint David’s Men’s Club has sponsored a horse show, to raise money for North Fulton Community Charities, where we are charter members. Some monies are also dedicated to the Men’s Club operating fund in support of the parish kitchen and the various church ministries the Men’s Club supports throughout the year.
The show is usually scheduled on a Saturday in mid-March, with a steak dinner the evening before. Please keep this date open on your calendar.
You will find more information regarding specifics of volunteer needs, disbursement of monies, ad book sales, and the Horse Show in general
in the church newsletter, The Illumination, and the Sunday
bulletin announcements.
Contact Mike Dougherty
for more information.
ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC
Sponsored by the Men’s Club on the grounds of the church, the
picnic takes place after services, in late May or early June. The
Men’s Club cooks hot dogs and hamburgers, and parishioners bring
side dishes to share.
BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS
The Blessing of the Animals is held on the Saturday closest to the Feast of St. Francis, which is October
4. We are reminded of God’s love for us and all creation by the exemplary life of St. Francis. We know that your pets are already wonderful, but don’t forget to bring them (suitably leashed, caged, or otherwise restrained or contained) to St. David’s for the Blessing. The service is brief. Each pet and owner receives a blessing.
